Golden Monkey Trekking
In recent years more and more visitors that come to track the Mountain Gorillas also take the time for Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Trekking golden monkeys and gorillas is a similar experience – in a small group of no more than eight people, and you can spend one hour with the monkeys once you find them.
Where to find the Golden Monkeys?
Golden monkey trekking in Rwanda mostly takes place in the Volcanoes National Park which is found in the Virunga Mountains. There are two habituated Golden Monkey Groups presently that can be tracked in Volcanoes National Park ranging up to 100 members in each group, which is quite a sight to behold when you are up close to them.
Golden Monkeys are playful, nosy and flit around in the Bamboo Forest in a most playful manner that proves to delight those who have come to track and observe them. They are easily recognized due to the yellow patches that can be seen all over their bodies. The endangered species are very active creatures, and jump from tree to tree which is interesting and a little difficult to photograph!
The Trek to see the Golden Monkeys
Those who are willing to take part in the golden monkey trekking are advised to report at the headquarters by 7:00 am for a mini briefing about the trek before it starts and it is only fifteen minutes away from the Park.
How Much Does a Golden Monkey Permit Cost?
Just like in mountain gorillas, Travelers to see golden monkeys are required to buy permits which allow them to access and spend an hour with these amazing creatures. Fortunately, golden monkey permits are quite cheap costing $100 per permit. Permits are bought from Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in Rwanda. Travelers are reminded to book for permits at least 3 months before the trekking date to secure permits and ensure timely planning. The cost of a golden monkey permit involves park entry fees, ranger fee, and government taxes.
How Long Does the Trek to see the Golden Monkeys Take?
The time to spend in the jungle is around an hour and the hike takes around 30 minutes. However, golden monkeys do not go into higher altitudes like gorillas hence sparing travelers several hours of hiking.
What to Wear to the Trek?
As to what to wear- it is best to wear long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, hat, light-rain-jacket or poncho, waterproof hiking boots, a waterproof daypack, with some snacks such as granola bars, enough bottled water and camera equipment.
