8 Fun Things To Do In Toronto
Toronto is one of the most fascinating cities in North America. Located across Lake Ontario from the U.S., and having been shaped by European and Native American influence alike, it is, in some ways, the most North American of cities. It also happens to be a pretty, modern city with plenty for visitors to see and do. We get into some of the highlights below.
1. See The Distillery District
The idea of visiting a distillery is not at all unique to Toronto. There are other places in the world – say Dublin, for example, the home of Jameson whiskey – that are known for legendary distilleries. An entire distillery district, however, is a little more unusual, and it’s one of the coolest things you’ll find in Toronto. A national historic site with some of the best-preserved 1800s-era industrial architecture in North America, it’s just a beautiful pedestrian area to explore. You’ll see shops, bars, restaurants, and sometimes even live performing arts.
2. Visit The Toronto Islands
On Toronto’s three islands, just a short ferry ride from the city, you’ll find gardens, walking paths, lighthouses, beaches, and fun places to eat. The real joy of visiting the islands, however, is just getting away from the size and crowd of the city for a few hours to relax in a surprisingly serene outdoor environment (and with very cool views of the city).
3. Shop St. Lawrence Market
It seems you can never find a major city without a famous market or two, and Toronto is yet another that belongs on the list. In this case, it’s the St. Lawrence Market, which was first established, at least in some form, back in the 1600s! Even now it’s a thriving market in the Old Town portion of the city, featuring everything from basic retail shopping to cooking and dining experiences.
4. Take In Live Sports
Quite simply, Toronto is a city that appreciates its sports. Canada is generally passionate about various winter sports as well as some connections to the major U.S. leagues, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that sports betting is legal in the country – though participants must be 18-plus years of age. Regardless, whether we’re talking about a casual fan looking to bet on outcomes, a lifelong hockey fan attending Maple Leafs games, or a young person joining the ecstatic crowds that flock to Raptors playoff basketball games, it’s a very fun sports city. Seeing most any event is worth the time.
5. Tour The Museums & Galleries
Like any self-respecting big city, Toronto has some incredible museums and galleries for tourists to enjoy. The Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery Of Ontario, and the Hockey Hall of Fame make for a nice start.
6. Visit The Zoo & Aquarium
Similar to museums and galleries, Toronto also follows the tradition of other bit cities by including a zoo and an aquarium that a lot of travelers delight in. Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is actually one of the biggest aquariums in the world, providing just about anything you could ask for of such a venue. And the Toronto Zoo is in fact also one of the largest attractions of its kind and includes exhibits for some of the most incredible animals on the planet (such as gorillas, big cats, and hundreds more species).
7. Try Out The CN Tower
The CN Tower is probably the one building you recognize from the Toronto skyline – a towering stick of a skyscraper somewhat reminiscent of the more famous Seattle “Space Needle.” It’s quite something to scale the tower and enjoy its 360 views and restaurant. However, more adventurous travelers may also enjoy the “Edge Walk,” the world’s highest full circle hands-free walk, which basically allows you to safely traverse the exterior of the top of the tower.
8. Eat Some Poutine
It’s a little bit of a cliché recommendation, and Montréal may have a bigger reputation for this Canadian comfort food delicacy. But you simply shouldn’t visit a major Canadian city without trying the poutine. NomNomNom and Poutini’s House of Poutine are a few of the names to keep an eye out for if you’re looking for a restaurant.
