From the moment we arrived at the Clifftop Lodge South Africa we were taken away by the dramatic views of the magnificent cliffs at the Welgevonden Game Reserve.
Welgevonden is private, malaria-free Big Five Game Reserve and home to many animals like Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Elephant, White Rhino, Buffalo, Brown Hyena… It is located only three hours drive from Johannesburg and offers amazing game drives and luxurious lodges.
Clifftop Exclusive Safari Hideaway was created in harmony with the natural environment by one of South Africa’s leading architects. Beautiful suites, fine dining, incredible game drives and breathtaking green hills with serene views… I think you could not wish for more.
Location
You can self-drive to the Welgevonden Game Reserve, arrange a transfer as we did or you can even fly to the reserve because there is a private airstrip only 45 min away from the lodge. The closest gate to the lodge is the East Gate, about 20 minutes from the lodge.
Welgevonden Game Reserve
Welgevonden Game Reserve has grown to be one of South Africa’s premier private reserves. It is located on the edge of an ancient rock cliff in the malaria-free Limpopo Province of South Africa. Over the years, it has been extensively re-stocked with numerous animals like lion, rhino, cheetah or an elephant. Here you can also find diverse bird life and other animals like the mammal, wild dog, baboon and many more.
Lodge
Clifftop Exclusive Safari Hideaway is a 5-star retreat with a breathtaking setting, fine cuisine, and world-class luxury. It offers both leisure and corporate guests an unforgettable safari experience in the middle of the African bush.
The main lodge is magnificent and modernly furnished with wood, grey stones, white furniture and silver decor. The place is very spacious with a small reception, nice lounge area with bar, amazing viewing deck with pool and lovely dining venue with magnificent views. There is also a gracious wine cellar with premium South African wines. You can stay in one of the eight beautifully decorated lodges with private terrace and swimming pool. If you are looking for ultimate relaxation, you can order a massage treatment in the privacy of your suite.
Room
Clifftop Lodge has eight luxurious freestanding suites, which provide guests ultimate escape with spectacular views of the Sterkfontein River. They are positioned in a way that they provide total privacy for their guests.
The suites are very spacious with high ceilings, king-size bed, lounge area with sofa and large windows that lead to the private terrace with plunge pool. Lock away your phone and computer and just relax on the terrace and enjoy the nature and the tranquility of this amazing place.
There is an indoor and outdoor shower and separate freestanding bath with all amenities and breathtaking views of the valley. The suites are nicely decorated with all necessary amenities (except no television, wi-fi or cell phone signal). In-room amenities include hairdryer, in-room safe, air-conditioning, tea and coffee-making facilities and a mini-bar.
Dining
Dinning at the Clifftop Lodge was very special and the food is of a very high standard. They offer different African and Western cuisine and the dishes are always delicious.
Breakfast was enormous and consisted of a beautifully decorated plate of yogurt, muesli, cheese, ham, and pastry and for the second plate, you could choose a hot breakfast with eggs, sausages, and bread. Lunch was also very delicious and usually consisted of large salad, chicken or fish. The dinner was very special and every night served in a different private spot. The table was beautifully decorated and the food served was amazing. We had a four-course dinner with amazing wines every night.
Safari
Safari in Welgevonden Game Reserve was an unforgettable experience for us and we were looking forward to this our whole trip. We had incredible ranger Ed and could not wish for a better one. He was very knowledgable, fun and always full of information. It was always an enjoyable ride with him and it was a pleasure to listen to all the information he provided about different animals. The game drives with Ed were more than exciting and we had the time of our life.
We had two spectacular action-packed game drives each day. The first one in the early morning at 6 am and the second one in the early evening at 4 am. We enjoyed the drive in an open safari vehicle, watching the nature around us while searching for the animals. We spotted a lot of animals on our gamer drives, including amazing birds, insects, and interesting plants. The reserve is home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. And yes, we saw it all!
Conclusion
We spent four amazing days at Clifftop Lodge and would happily return to this magnificent place.
It is only three hours drive from Johannesburg and you are in a completely different world. Amazing nature with gorgeous views, thrilling game drives, excellent cuisine, fabulous lodges, friendly staff and unique wildlife experience. This and more awaits you at Clifftop Lodge in the middle of the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve.
