Koh Samui is the second biggest island in Thailand, right after Phuket. This tropical paradise is one of the most visited islands in the World. How to get there
Koh Samui is a relatively small island but you can get there either by ferry from the nearby islands or by airplane. Before the end of the twentieth century, the island had an incredibly small community and the roads did not exist until the early seventies. These days you can rent a car or a scooter to go around the island and roads are in pretty good condition.
When to visit
Koh Samui, as the rest of Thailand, is a year-round destination, but be sure to check the weather if you don’t wish to travel in the rainy season. The climate in Thailand is warm and humid all year round. The humidity level is generally around 80% and the average temperature is around 28°C.
So, the best time to visit Koh Samui is in a dry season from December to February. The temperatures are bearable, there is a little rain and the sea is calm. Do have in mind that this would is the peak season and the prices will go up. If you don’t mind the hot temperatures, you can visit the island between March and April when temperatures get 30°C+. From June to August you can expect daytime sunshine followed by late afternoon thunderstorms. The monsoon season starts from September and lasts until November. You can expect heavy rainfall during this months, but it doesn’t rain every day and the prices decrease dramatically.
What to do
Rent a scooter and explore the island. Visit different beaches and take in the incredible views from different corners of the island. There are also several temples to check out, so be sure you don’t miss the Big Buddha, Elephant Rock, Hin Ta Hin Yai, Ang Thong National Marine Park, different markets, amazing waterfalls and Fishermans Village. If you like to party you can go to the famous Koh Phangan Full Moon Party.
The island
The northern part of the island is home to pristine beaches with white sand and turquoise waters. Bophut Beach is a wonderful place for families and honeymooners. It is one of the most elegant places on the island with modern buildings and Mediterranean vibe. It is located near the historical Fisherman’s Village and provides more than 2km of sandy coastline. If you wish to relax and enjoy the calm waters of the sea, then this is the place for you. Maenam Beach is a perfect destination for the entire family and especially for surfers and backpackers. There are a number of inexpensive bungalows located along the five-kilometer long beach. The beach is located close to Samui’s finest golf course called Santiburi Golf and Country Club. And if you wish to visit the nearby islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, you can board the ferry here.
The eastern part of Koh Samui offers a world-class resorts, hotels, restaurants and beaches. One of the most popular places is definitely Chaweng Beach. This part of the island is the most developed with five-star hotels, clubs, markets, shops and numerous restaurants. Here you will also find one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. If you love to party, then this is a place for you. Next to Chaweng Beach you will find charming Lamai Beach with beautiful private resorts and laid back atmosphere. Don’t forget to visit the fascinating rock formations known as Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks, while you are visiting this part of the island.
Central coast offers lush forests, coconut plantations, and amazing waterfalls. You can visit the magnificent Na Muang Waterfalls or go on an exciting elephant trekking through the jungle.
The last part of the island to be discovered is the South Coast. Aside from great beaches, this part of the island plays host to the Samui Butterfly Garden with an incredible assortment of colorful butterflies and the Samui Aquarium and Tiger Zoo with spectacular tiger show.
