Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron
Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron is a special place with lots of character, history and so many stories to tell. If you grew up watching The Sound of Music, then you will be thrilled to hear that you can actually stay in the place where they shot the movie. And if you ever dreamt about staying in a real castle, then this is a place for you. But even if you are not a Sound of Music fan, you still have so many reasons to visit this magical place.
Schloss Leopoldskron is located in Salzburg Austria, with incredible views of the lake and the Alps. It is situated in the prime location, in the serenity of suburbia, yet perfect walking distance from the old town of Salzburg. Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron is such a romantic place with its beautiful gardens, astonishing rooms and it has so much history hidden behind the castle doors.
Schloss Leopoldskron was commissioned as a family estate in 1736 by the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian. A special law made the property a private possession of the family. In May 1744, Leopold deeded the completed Schloss over to his nephew, Count Laktanz Firmian. After his death later in the same year, the Archbishop’s body was buried in Salzburg’s cathedral, but his heart remains below the Chapel in the Schloss, which, as is inscribed on the chapel floor, he “loved so dearly.”
During the 19th century, the Schloss passed through various hands, among them Bavarian King Ludwig I and Carl Spängler, a well-known banker and two waiters who attempted to turn it into a hotel.
In 1918, the Schloss, which by that time had fallen into a state of severe disrepair, was sold to Max Reinhardt, Europe’s most famous theater director and co-founder of the Salzburg Festival. Reinhardt committed his considerable creative talents to the restoration of the Schloss, and with the assistance of Salzburg artisans, he renovated the staircase, the Great Hall, and the Marble Hall. The Library and the Venetian Room are Reinhardt creations, as are decorations in other salons. Max Reinhardt brought life back to Schloss Leopoldskron.
Today, Schloss Leopoldskron is home to both Salzburg Global Seminar and Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron. The historic castle offers 12 individually designed suites, each equipped with antique furniture and the separate Meierhof building (formerly the stables and servants quarters) offers 55 guest rooms.
The architecture is incredible and beautifully preserved. You can stroll through the gardens, daydream and get lost in this magical place. The real showstopper is the main castle building with its amazing staircase, the Great Hall, Chinese Room, Venetian Room, Marble Hall and the most incredible library I have ever seen. Definitely worth exploring!
Schloss Leopoldskron also offers a perfect setting for weddings, events, and seminars.
When we arrived at the hotel the friendly staff members immediately welcomed us and presented us with all the information about the Schloss and of course a key to our room. We stayed in a standard double room located in the Meierhof building adjacent to the Schloss. The room was smaller than we are used to (approximately 15 square meters) but very comfortable and cozy with separate bathroom with bathtub. All the rooms in the Meierhof building were refurbished in early 2014 and are furnished with modern furniture and lovely details.
All rooms are inclusive of full buffet breakfast, a bottle of mineral water, free Wi-Fi, use of bicycles and the fitness center, mini golf, welcome drink, parking, and access to the adjacent swimming pool.
The Sound of Music
As mentioned before the hotel is well known as the castle where they filmed The Sound of Music. The story of the von Trapp family has fascinated the entire world since the film version of “The Sound of Music” aired in 1965. Schloss Leopoldskron has served as a film setting for different outdoor and indoor scenes. One of the main rooms of the palace, the Venetian Room on the first floor, was completely replicated in order to be used as a film setting. The magnificent handcrafted, gold wall panels and mirrors served as a model for the ballroom scene in the film.
I find myself extremely fortunate to be able to stay in such a beautiful historic place. So, if you are a fan of a movie I would warmly recommend a visit to Schloss Leopoldskron. It’s a dream come true!
