Six Cool Things About Bangkok
Bangkok is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. It is so special that you will love to come back every time you plan a trip to Thailand. The city has something that others don’t, a mixture of old and modern, temples, smiling people and great food.
The city currently has about 8 million inhabitants. You will often see a whole family on a scooter or notice a little truck with more than twenty people on it. Welcome to Thailand! 🙂
The climate is tropical, with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius. The rainiest season is during the European summer (especially the month of September) and the best time to visit is in the winter. To make your trip to Bangkok easier, we have gathered six cool things about Bangkok.
1. Floating Market
Chao Praya River is the main traffic artery and divides the city into two parts. To see the most famous and largest floating market, you need to visit Damnoen Saduak (approximately 100 km from Bangkok).
2. Temples
The city has more than 400 temples, small and large. Most large luxurious temples are in the city center, near the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace is a set of temples in a very large area, it will take you at least half a day to see them all.
Here you can see a little replica of the most famous Khmer Temple of Angkor Wat, located in Cambodia. The dress code requires long pants and long sleeves. In accordance with the tradition, you need to take off your shoes, before entering the temple with a Buddha statue.
The second most famous temple is Wat Pho. It stands just behind the Royal Palace and it is home to one of the biggest lying Buddha statues. The temple is a gallery with 394 statues of Buddha.
Wat Saket or Golden Temple is a slightly smaller temple in the form of a golden bell. It stands on an artificial hill that was once the highest point in the city.
Wat Arun Temple or The temple of the morning dawn is a tourist’s most famous temple in Bangkok. It stands on the other side of the river, opposite the temple of Wat Po. You can reach it by boat, which runs every ten minutes. The temple is best known for its central tower surrounded by four smaller towers located in a beautiful garden with several pavilions. You can go for a ride along the river to see the city from the river Chao Praya, it is simply a must-have experience.
3. Shopping
You cannot imagine visiting Bangkok without shopping. No matter whether it comes to electronics, silk, clothing or souvenirs, the city offers countless possibilities.
There are numerous hotels, street restaurants, shops, markets and temples in the Siam area. For example, Silom Road is famous for its Japanese and Indian restaurants, Sukhumvit Road is the Indian-oriented area with many new hotels, near Victory Monument you will find huge Chatuchak Fair, where you can buy everything you can imagine.
4. Food
Thailand food is excellent and definitely a must-try. Unidentified tastes and scents, spices and flavors, a tasty blend of sweet and spicy that prevails in Thai cuisine, and a wide variety of combinations of meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables. Simply fantastic! Try the national soup Tom Yum Kung, rice noodles Pad Thai, excellent curry or grilled fish. The possibilities are endless and you will certainly enjoy every bite.
5. Nightlife
Nightlife is another delicacy of Bangkok. Early in the evening, you can visit some of the fairs like Patpong in Silom street. This area is full of stalls and shops where you can find everything from nightclubs to restaurants. The street comes alive in the evening and turns into something completely different from the daytime. The same goes for Khao San Road, where you will find restaurants, bars, and stalls.
Chinatown is definitely worth a visit. Here you will find many street restaurants where they sell all kinds of fruits, vegetables, fish and various fried insects.
Most clubs and elegant restaurants are in the famous hotels. Banyan Tree Hotel has a wonderful restaurant and an open bar on the roof, in Lebua State Tower you can observe the city from a restaurant in the form of a golden dome. Hotel Baiyoke offers a view from the bar on its top floor.
6. Transport
A very popular means of transport are three-wheel tuk-tuk drivers. Driving will cost you little more than one Euro, (of course you have to bargain). The ride is a chaotic, but fun experience.
