Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Travel to Antarctica with Albatros Expeditions
Here are answers to your question Why you should travel to Antarctica?
A southernmost continent is an awesome place, in the old-fashioned sense of the word. Steep mountains, grinding glaciers and icebergs of every configuration, and a surprising range of colors make up Antarctica’s extraordinary landscape. And because the continent is so remote, much of this landscape remains unknown.
If you wish to visit this remote continent, you need the best cruise expedition provider to make the most out of your adventure!
To date, there are several IAATO-accredited companies out there who offer different cruises to Antarctica. My trip was with Albatros Expeditions and here are the top 10 reasons why you should choose them for your Antarctic journey.
I traveled with Albatros Expeditions on their ship Ocean Atlantic in February 2020 to the seventh continent. It was a twelve days long expedition and it has been the best trip that I have ever done in my life!
Why Travel to Antarctica with Albatros Expeditions?
1. An established world-leading cruise expedition company
From its humble beginnings providing African safaris to adventurous Danes, Albatros Travel has established offices and operations on three continents throughout the last three decades. Its core business remains outbound travel from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, however inbound operations and specialized offerings such as arctic/antarctic cruises and safari experiences, not to mention the internationally renowned marathon events such as the Great Wall Marathon and the Polar Circle Marathon, have securely placed Albatros Travel on the global scene.
2. An expedition that combines exploration and knowledge
A cruise with Albatros Expeditions does not only focus on providing comfort but also in giving meaning to Antarctic adventures. Their expedition cruise team consists of expedition leaders, biologists, and professionals who have extensive knowledge of Polar Regions and a passion for exploration. They will assist you during each adventure and make you feel like a true explorer.
To date, they have 2 expedition ships that travel to Antarctic and Arctic, and they are called Ocean Atlantic and Ocean Victory. Both of these have been built with polar travel in mind; furthermore, they feature amazing amenities such as observation decks, lounge areas, lecture halls, two bars, fitness room, a spacious restaurant providing 4-star international cuisine, the onboard clinic, boutique, sauna and library among many others.
In 2022, the company will be launching its third expedition ship and it will be called Ocean Albatros. The ship will operate in both Antarctica and Arctic, and on cruises between these core expedition areas.
3. A crew of Polar experts and lecturers
I have to say that the team of experts on the ship is crucial. You’ll be assured to know that on Albatros Expeditions they are equipped with an experienced and professional expedition team — which is basically a dedicated group of individuals that will help you discover the best of Antarctica. Albatros has scientists who are experts in areas such as arctic survival, geology, glaciology, marine biology, oceanography, and others. They will be conducting various lectures and presentations throughout the journey, after all, they are adventurers who are passionate about what they do!
There will also be a kayak, zodiac, hiking and snowshoe master on board as well as a professional photographer will help you capture your memories in the best way!
4. A safe expedition on ship and land
It’s no news that Antarctica is one of the wildest places on Earth. While of course, no travel is entirely without risk, Antarctic travel is not especially dangerous. If you go from South America, the most dangerous part is the open ocean between the Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula known as Drake’s Passage. Are you still asking yourself why you should travel to Antarctica?
When you’re traveling with Albatros Expeditions, you will surely be with the company of people who will always put everyone’s safety first. There will be safety briefings and drills held to inform guests on how to act in case of any emergencies. Zodiac landings will only be done if the weather permits. Like I mentioned before, the whole expedition team knows the terrain well through the years of experience and their multiple landings.
Every shore landing will be done with your zodiac master, who will help you along the way with instruction and guidance. Once you’re on the land, you will be guided through the safest paths with enough personnel to assist you if you ever are in need. But, the paths are always walk-able and easy enough for everyone.
5. A lot of included excursions and optional activities
The days on Albatros will be fully packed with activities, briefings, lectures, entertainment, and even a cooking class. Most of the activities and excursions are already included in the price, but there are some optional ones like kayaking or snowshoeing.
6. Numerous shore landings with exceptional locations
There are a few things to have in mind when you try to answer your question ¨Why you should travel to Antarctica?¨ and before you book your expedition cruise to this remote continent. First, the size of a ship and the second the route.
As per the Antarctic Treaty and IAATO rules, every Antarctica landing should have no more than 100 people at once onshore. It is good to know that Albatros Expeditions holds only 200 passengers, compared to ships that hold 500 people. They will split you into two groups. The one group will go onshore and the other half will join a zodiac cruise. After that, you will switch, so both groups will have enough time onshore as well as on cruise.
Though of course, there will be times that some landings may not be possible due to sudden weather changes or ice conditions; but you can be sure that Albatros expedition teams will do their best to arrange as many landings as possible.
7. A commitment to responsible travel
The Environmental Protocol designates Antarctica as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science. It seeks to ensure that human activities, including tourism, do not have adverse impacts on the Antarctic environment. It is said that anyone who comes to Antarctica should have “no more than a minor or transitory impact” on the environment.
Albatros team will educate you onboard (with mandatory briefings, vacuum-cleaning party and boot disinfection system) and prepare you for your landings on shore.
8. A High-quality onboard equipment
Albatros will take care of its guests and provide them with complementary jackets that will protect them against wind and cold. Also, everyone will receive muck boots and safety-approved life jackets for every expedition. Guests who opt for kayaking activities will get to have top quality kayak gear, dry-suits, and stable double kayaks.
There are 19 zodiacs on board that are used for landings and zodiac cruising. They are extremely robust and approved for Antarctic waters and conditions.
9. Exquisite dining throughout the journey
The food on Ocean Atlantic is simply amazing. The variety and quality astounded me every day. We had the freshest and most delicious food during our 12-day journey. There was a buffet breakfast and lunch and for dinner, we always had luxurious 4-course meals. Besides all that we had a barbecue lunch, sweet pastries surprises, birthday cakes, Valentine’s menu Captains party and more.
10. A positive impact and awareness programs
Albatros Expeditions recognizes its responsibility to contribute positively to social, environmental and economic sustainable development in an effort to keep the oceans clean and as unpolluted as possible.
They have established foundations not only for raising awareness but also for financially supporting projects like Whale and Dolphin Conservation, Hookpod and the UN Global Compact organization.
