What To See In Durban
Durban is a beautiful coastal city in the South African province KwaZulu-Natal. We recommend that you plan a stop there on your South African journey because it is a city with amazing cultural and scenic diversity that will blow your mind. So, if you are asking yourself what to see in Durban, we have some tips for you.
Durban provides visitors so many unique experiences from a gorgeous coastline, surfing opportunities, rich Indian culture, golfing, urban lifestyle, peaceful gardens to amazing restaurants and friendly people.
If you would like to see as much as possible, of this amazing city in one day, we recommend that you take an organized tour with the tour guide. We decided to take Durban city tour with a company called Endless Summer which provides experienced guides that will take you on an adventure of a lifetime. Our tour guide was Anthony, who owns the company together with Rhys. He was fun, friendly and very knowable about the city.
Anthony picked us up at our hotel Three Cities, and we spend a wonderful day exploring Durban. We learned so much about the city, diverse history and saw Durban’s top attractions such as the Botanical Gardens, Golden Mile beachfront, Moses Mabhida stadium and we even went on a rickshaw ride along the coastline.
Botanical Gardens
Durban’s Botanical Gardens are among the best in the world. The garden has a good assortment of plants and a large collection of orchids. It is a great place to relax, read a book, go for a walk or just to enjoy the tranquility. On the weekend families gather in the park to relax, have a picnic or to attend different concerts.
The Beach
Durban is known for its golden sand beaches and the most known beach is the Golden Mile beach, which is the closest to Durban’s city center. Here you can walk, jog or bike along the wide promenade or you can soak in the ocean, watch sandcastle architects or take a rickshaw ride. Durban is also one of the top surfing destinations in South Africa.
Indian Quarter
Durban is home to the largest Indian population outside India and that is why a visit to Durban’s Indian quarter is a must for any visitor to the City. Here you will find markets with fabrics, shoes, clothes, jewelry and of course spices. The spice shops are incredible with spices like saffron, tandoori, cumin and different curry mixtures. The smells, sights, and sounds of India are visible everywhere. It is a fantastic place to spend your afternoon!
Bungee Swing
The Moses Mabhida stadium is the world’s only stadium with a bungee swing. It is also a world’s tallest swing as stated in the Guinness Book of Records. So, if you are brave enough, you can jump into the void, but if you would just like to observe the gorgeous views from above, we would recommend taking the sky car to the top. Here you will have a lovely 360-degree view of the city.

The company Endless Summer Tours also offer different safari packages where you can experience Africa’s Big 5, interact with animals and learn more about them. Another interesting and very popular tour is also shark cage diving. You can dive with black tips, spinner and dusky sharks, which can grow up to two and a half meters. No diving experience is needed. You can choose between different tours from adventure, game viewing, cultural and site seeing tours or you can ask for a customized tour and they will be happy to assist you.
We had just one day in Durban and wanted to know more about the city and its history, so we were very satisfied with the tour that we choose and had a lovely time with Anthony.
