The Company
GS Tours is based in Chania since 1990 but they will pick you up from your hotel anywhere in the area. They organize local excursions, vacations and alternative activities all over Crete. This year they developed a new project called “Fabulous Crete” where they specialize in small group activities, tours, cultural sights and adventures. On their website, you can find a lot of interesting facts about the island’s history, tradition and culture. Altogether they offer around 55 tour options.
The Tour
We decided to book one of their wine tours called Wine Walkers Crete (Tour 3). The tour took place in Apokoronas. Apokoronas is in the north-eastern corner of the Chania prefecture. From there you will have amazing views of the White Mountains. The scenery is breathtaking.
First, we visited the Dourakis winery in Alikampos village. We saw the cellar which is inside the cave, a 500 years old ancient treadle, a museum of traditional Cretan exhibits and their own private herbs garden. Afterward, they prepared amazing food and wine pairing for us to enjoy. We tasted their significant wines like Vidiano, Vilana, Malvazia, Kotsifali and Romeiko, which is performed in a special way. And tasted their local dishes.
Our next stop was a scenic Cretan village. We walked around a bit to get the feel of traditional Cretan life and then we went for a drink to the local restaurant. The owner was really friendly and gave us Raki – traditional Cretan spirit with a platter of cheese and their famous lamb dish. The food was so good that we would definitely recommend you to visit this small restaurant!
